Subnet mask cheat sheet

Every IPv4 prefix from /0 to /32 with its dotted mask, wildcard, address count and usable hosts. Select a row for that prefix's own page.

Block size = 256 − octet value. With /27 (mask .224) blocks go up in 32s: .0, .32, .64 … .224. Want the maths done for a specific address? Use the subnet calculator.

Questions people ask

What is the most common subnet mask?
255.255.255.0 (/24): 256 addresses, 254 usable hosts. It is the default on nearly every home router and a common size for office VLANs.
How do I memorise subnet masks?
Learn the eight possible octet values: 128, 192, 224, 240, 248, 252, 254, 255 (adding 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1). Each prefix step to the right adds the next bit and halves the block size.
How many /24s are in a /16?
224−16 = 256. In general, a /a contains 2b−a blocks of /b.
